Sweetgrass Baskets were brought to the United States during Slavery as early as the 1600's. This Living History Tradition has been handed down in my family from generation to generation. My ancestors made these baskets to be used on plantations as work baskets for winnowing rice, harvesting fruits and vegetables, wood, laundry, etc. Today, these baskets are Authentic Collector's Items.
When you order a basket from Sweetgrass Gullah Connection, you will receive more than just a basket, you will obtain a part of a Living Legacy that connects two Continents where souls are sewn together through History.

Sweetgrass Basketry of slaves ancestors of West Africa. Knowing the importance of the sweetgrass basket legacy, Nakia teaches the history of this tradition as well as the necessity to preserve the natural resources used to make these baskets. The Sweetgrass Basket is the Official Craft for the State of South Carolina.
